Bathurst streetcar service down after electrical issue, but TTC says still plenty of options to get to CNE | CBC News
"A major streetcar line connecting parts of Toronto to the Canadian National Exhibition, which is in its last weekend, is out of service due to an electrical issue. But the TTC is providing replacement buses and says the issue won't reduce transit capacity this weekend. On Thursday evening, transit agents identified an electrical cable that was shorting out near King and Shaw streets, TTC spokesperson Stuart Green said. The cable is in a junction box that provides power to the 511 Bathurst streetcar, he said."
"While the cause of the issue is being investigated, Green said, "what we do know is that because of all the extra streetcar service that we had out for the CNE, it was stressing this particular junction box." The transit agency was concerned that streetcars on the route might lose power entirely, so as a precaution, they were taken out of service and replaced with buses along the route, Green said."
An electrical cable was shorting out near King and Shaw streets, affecting the junction box that powers the 511 Bathurst streetcar. Extra streetcar service for the CNE stressed the junction box and risked causing power loss. As a precaution, streetcars on the route were removed and replaced with buses running between Exhibition Loop and Bathurst Station until streetcars return Tuesday. Twenty buses will be assigned to match lost streetcar capacity. Additional routes including the 509 Harbourfront streetcar, 29 Dufferin bus, 63 Ossington bus and GO Transit provide access to the CNE entrance or nearby areas. The cause of the short remains under investigation.
