"Alek Manoah continues to struggle this spring both in terms of stuff and command. He has seemingly made no changes to his arsenal since joining the Angels and his struggles finding the zone persist. This is not an MLB-quality pitcher."
"After Manoah's first outing, his fastball velocity was where a pitcher wants it to be. Throwing high 90s, it looked like Manoah was on a good path. However, the ball was fast but extremely flat and that hasn't improved as Spring Training has moved on."
"Most of the time, it's hard to put any stock into Spring Training stats, but in Manoah's case there are certain things we can evaluate and figure out whether or not he is improving. The short answer is, he is not."
Alek Manoah's Spring Training with the LA Angels has been disappointing, threatening his chances of making the starting rotation. In his latest outing against West Sacramento, he allowed five earned runs in 2.1 innings with three hits and five walks. His fastball velocity remains in the high 90s, but the pitches are flat and lack command. Manoah has shown no improvement throughout spring and continues missing the zone across all pitches. His spring statistics reveal a 6.14 ERA over 7.1 innings with a 2.05 WHIP and four strikeouts. The Angels' first four rotation spots appear locked with Kikuchi, Soriano, Detmers, and Rodriguez. Unlike typical spring training performances, Manoah's underlying metrics indicate genuine issues with stuff and command that persist from before his Tommy John surgery.
