4 players the Blue Jays may consider protecting from the Rule 5 Draft
"The final date that teams can add internal players to the roster to protect them from the Rule 5 Draft is set for November 18th, just a few days away. Last year, Toronto decided to protect nobody and selected Angel Bastardo, who spent the entire season on the IL while he rehabbed from Tommy John surgery. The only casualty from the Jays' side was Garrett Spain, who was taken in the Minor League portion by the Milwaukee Brewers."
"When it comes to sure bets, the Jays adding Ricky Tiedemann seems like one of them. The former Top 100 prospect was working his way up the minor league ladder before an elbow injury in 2024 saw him land on the IL, eventually undergoing Tommy John surgery. He missed all of 2025 while rehabbing and should be good to go in the new year."
"Over the course of three seasons in the minors, Tiedemann owns a 3.02 ERA and a 1.079 WHIP across 140 innings, with injuries limiting his time on the mound since being drafted in 2021. When healthy, he's a strikeout artist, crafting a 14.5 K/9 with 226 strikeouts across all four levels in the Jays system. Tiedemann should be in the mix for a rotation spot next spring"
November 18 is the deadline to add internal players to the 40-man roster to protect them from the Rule 5 Draft. The Blue Jays currently have 37 of 40 roster spots filled, leaving three openings for free-agent signings or protecting internal prospects. Last year Toronto protected nobody and lost Garrett Spain in the Minor League portion while Angel Bastardo spent the season on the IL. The team should consider protecting prospects such as left-hander Ricky Tiedemann and outfielder Yohendrick Pinango. Tiedemann underwent Tommy John surgery, missed 2025, and has strong minor-league metrics and high strikeout rates when healthy.
