Vecna has long threatened Hawkins and shaped events behind the scenes. Season 5 opens with the first five minutes released by Netflix, returning to the moment after Will Byers is taken to the Upside Down. That flashback reveals Will fighting to survive—using a shotgun, climbing and leaping from trees—and shows what happened between his capture and rescue. The flashback presents Will's first encounter with Vecna in the villain's lair, where Vecna sends a tendril down his throat and promises, "You and I, we are going to do such beautiful things together." Season 5 takes place near the anniversary of Will's disappearance, suggesting a final showdown with Vecna.
