"The golden bag competition for the Walter family dates back to 2006, when siblings - Jesse Walter, Rebecca Rutherford, Jeremy Walter and Sarah Bauer - observed their mother, Diane Walter, reusing a gold-colored gift bag and handing it to her "favorite" child. Since then, the competition has become a year-long campaign that results in a winner being crowned (and heckled!) at the family's annual Christmas gathering."
""We just noticed that this bag kept reappearing, and it was trashier and trashier by the year," explains Jesse. "So we used to make fun of each other and say, 'Hey, you're the favorite if you get it.' And that's how the tradition just appeared out of nowhere." Though it's used year after year, Diane keeps the bag in tip top shape."I swear she color matched the duct tape because it's flawless," says Rebecca."
Four adult siblings maintain a playful, yearlong competition called the golden bag to vie for their parents' perceived favoritism. The tradition began in 2006 after their mother repeatedly reused a gold gift bag and subtly handed it to a 'favorite' child. The contest culminates at the family's Christmas gathering, where a winner is crowned amid teasing. Siblings trade gags, exclude one another jokingly, and even concealed a birth from one sister. The mother preserves the bag meticulously, while the father now usually presents the prize to avoid guilt. The rivalry combines close sibling bonds with affectionate mockery.
