"Netflix has now become known for its international TV series like or Money Heist. But back in 2017, non-English Netflix originals were still a big risk. When it debuted as the first-ever German-language Netflix original series, proved to be more than just a successful experiment: it's still one of the best Netflix sci-fi shows ever made. Now, the minds behind it are developing a new series for HBO Max"
"Chris Emil Janssen/Action Press/Shutterstock HBO Max recently announced an expansion of its streaming service into Europe with a launch date of January 13 in Germany. This expansion means a brand-new audience for local programming, and HBO is bringing in the big guns: Jantje Friese and Baran Bo Odar, creators of Dark, will oversee a series "in which the dark tales of Struwwelpeter become gruesome reality.""
Netflix grew known for international series such as Money Heist while non-English originals were still risky in 2017. Dark premiered as the first German-language Netflix original and became one of the most acclaimed Netflix sci-fi shows. Jantje Friese and Baran Bo Odar are developing a new series for HBO Max that repeats some of Dark's elements and introduces a distinctly German folk-horror tone. HBO Max will expand into Europe with a January 13 launch in Germany, creating demand for local programming. Struwwelpeter, an 1845 book by Heinrich Hoffmann, contains gruesome cautionary tales about children, including a girl who plays with matches and burns alive; one tale features a tailor who snips off thumbs of children who suck them, and the book is even referenced in American pop culture via The Office.
