"The Muppets and 'Sesame Street' have been great inspirations for us,"
"But we mixed that with a more Latin American idiosyncrasy, so it's familiar but very different."
"What we set out to do, I don't know if consciously, was to create characters who are not role models of anything,"
"They have their flaws and their virtues; in fact, they have more flaws, especially Tulio, who is a villain, but he's also the face of the show."
31 Minutos is a Chilean puppet-based parody newscast that debuted in March 2003 and spans four seasons. The show centers on self-centered news anchor Tulio Triviño and his reporter friend Juan Carlos Bodoque, a rabbit with a gambling problem; both are hand puppets who never age. The fictional town of Titirilquén hosts dozens of peculiar puppet characters whose absurdist misadventures are paired with pun-heavy original songs. Co-creators Pedro Peirano and Álvaro Díaz voice key characters and cite The Muppets and Sesame Street as inspirations, blended with a Latin American idiosyncrasy. The franchise expanded beyond television through the creators' production company, Aplaplac.
