Stephen Colbert described the cancellation of The Late Show as a surprise without preamble and called it the first number-one show to ever get cancelled. The decision followed Colbert's criticism of Paramount for making a $16m settlement with Donald Trump, and the network announced the show would end in May 2026. The Late Show began in 1993 and had been a top-rated program. CBS chief George Cheeks cited economic pressures and a declining advertising marketplace as the reason. Critics and former hosts called the decision cowardly, while Donald Trump celebrated the firing on social media.
