James Van Der Beek died at age 48. His family said he passed peacefully and asked for privacy while grieving their husband, father, son, brother, and friend. He had publicly shared a colorectal cancer diagnosis in 2024 and auctioned pieces of career memorabilia to help pay for treatment. Born in Connecticut in 1977, he began acting in New York City stage productions as a teenager and left Drew University when cast as Dawson Leery. He starred in 128 episodes of Dawson's Creek, helped define the WB network, and also appeared in Varsity Blues.
