Platonic Recap: Mediation Season
"Sylvia and Will's professional and personal lives have been entwined all season, starting with Sylvia planning her friend's wedding. So it feels pretty natural to see the two working together in a more official capacity in "Young Darcy Mysteries," a mostly relaxed episode with some hints at more drama to come in the final two episodes. Compared to some of this season's more plot- and character-heavy episodes, this one is fairly self-contained."
"But the biggest focus is Sylvia's first real gig for a non-friend client. She's throwing a party for Gen-Z heartthrob Mason Grand (a believably douchey Milo Manheim) to celebrate the premiere of his new series, Young Darcy Mysteries, a Pride and Prejudice prequel from the perspective of, you guessed it, a young Mr. Darcy. It's a fun enough sitcom plot, even if Mason Grand is only mildly effective as a comic creation."
"That basic dynamic repeats itself a few times: Will and Mason's friendship continues to develop (they're exchanging memes now, which is basically third base), and Will acts like a dick by making light of Mason's rudeness while also denying Sylvia's experience of it. It's easy to see why she takes all of this personally, and it's also easy to see why Will's not-so-secret desire to look cool"
Sylvia plans a premiere party for Gen-Z heartthrob Mason Grand as her first paid client gig, while her professional and personal life remains deeply entwined with Will. Mason repeatedly sidelines Sylvia through dismissive, sexist behavior, and Sylvia uses his craft-beer interest to try to win him over. Will befriends Mason and downplays Sylvia's experience, which intensifies Sylvia's frustration. The episode stays mostly self-contained as a sitcom installment but connects to ongoing tensions between Sylvia and Charlie and signals more drama in upcoming episodes.
