"For decades, viewers assumed that Coronation Street, Emmerdale and EastEnders all existed in hermetically-sealed parallel worlds. Each was set in a place that was recognisably England, but clearly not the same England as the others. Thus, no matter how many Coronation Street characters left the cobbles to go down to "that London", none of them ever popped into the Queen Vic for a lunchtime pint."
"'Fair City' (RTÉ One) 1/5"
For decades viewers assumed that Coronation Street, Emmerdale and EastEnders all existed in hermetically-sealed parallel worlds. Each soap is set in a place that is recognisably England but clearly not the same England as the others, creating distinct localities and social realities. Characters leaving one show's locale rarely, if ever, appear in another show's setting, preserving narrative integrity and internal continuity. Coronation Street characters who travel to "that London" never turn up for a pint in the Queen Vic. Fair City (RTÉ One) is given a one-out-of-five rating.
