Only Murders in the Building Season-Premiere Recap: Showing Your Hand
"I know what you're thinking: another murder in this building? Well, yes! It's called television, get on board. And something that this show does exceptionally well is avoiding repetition by exploring totally new corners of this world each season, whether it be theater, film, or, as we'll see this year, the mafia. You'll remember that last season ended with the death of Lester the doorman, but does that death fit the stringent, titular criteria that the trio has for their investigations?"
"How does a finger even end up in an order of shrimp anyway? Sure, FDA regulations are being stripped away, but let's assume that's not it. More likely, at least according to the trio, is that someone is sending them a message - like the horse head from The Godfather. Foreshadowing! Or perhaps it belongs to the resident dead guy, Lester, whose body is fortuitously lying in state in the building's lobby."
The series shifts focus each season to new settings and this installment examines the mafia within the Arconia. The previous season concluded with Lester the doorman's death, which may or may not meet the trio's strict murder-in-building criteria. The police label Lester's death an accident based on security footage, but the trio remains suspicious. A severed finger found in Oliver's leftover wedding shrimp suggests an ominous message and raises the possibility that Lester was murdered. Lester's body lies in state in the building lobby during a memorial where Mayor Tillman appears and delivers remarks that double as campaign theater.
