"Will Byers has been through a lot. His disappearance was the inciting incident that kicked off Stranger Things in its very first episode a decade ago. He has also been possessed by a supernatural mind-demon, and evolved into a human Geiger counter who can detect entities crossing over into our dimension from the Upside Down. Meanwhile, Will has faced other more normal teen crises, like growing apart from friends he loves, and dealing with the pressures of being gay in a less-than-tolerant era."
"They were like, "Come to set for these two weeks with this kid and just tell him how you work, how you breathe, how you move. I would run through all of my physicality from season 1, and it really helped me reflect too. Like, Oh man, I've grown so much since then. What did you do to guide him? I had to sit in a tent and just emote all these things."
Will Byers returns in season 5 with unexplained, Eleven-level telekinetic abilities that dramatically expand his role. Will previously disappeared, was possessed by a supernatural mind-demon, and developed sensitivity to Upside Down entities allowing detection of crossings. He also faces ordinary adolescent struggles including drifting from friends and navigating his sexual identity in an intolerant era. Noah Schnapp coached Luke Kokotek on set for flashback scenes, demonstrating physicality and emotional beats from earlier seasons. Schnapp credits the character with influencing his own coming out to friends and family. Early episodes reveal a more powerful and complex Will confronting both supernatural and personal challenges.
