Matlock Recap: A Game of Chicken
"Making episodic network television has always been a process of trial and error, as writers and cast gradually figure out which story lines and characters really pop and which drive the show into a ditch. I'm guessing that one thing Matlock showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman learned last year is that her show is more entertaining when Matty and Olympia are working together."
"Although Olympia has been trying hard to keep Matty on a leash - and far away from the New York Times - the fact of the matter is that Matty and Edwin have already contacted the Times multiple times, promising dirt on Jacobson-Moore and Wellbrexa. So it's only natural that a Times reporter would call around and start asking questions, prompting a very inconvenient internal J-M investigation into who at the firm has been blowing whistles."
Matty and Olympia reconcile quickly and resume working together, which yields a more entertaining dynamic. A New York Times reporter begins asking questions after Matty and Edwin contacted the paper promising dirt on Jacobson-Moore and Wellbrexa. The Times inquiry triggers an internal investigation at Jacobson-Moore into who has been leaking information. Senior summons partners and employees nationally to address the crisis. Two returning figures arrive: Eva Muñoz, Senior's ex-wife, who watches Olympia silently and unnervingly; and Lester Logan, the firm's head of security nicknamed "The Wolf." The episode pivots to cooperation and crisis management within the firm.
