""I have been thinking about it since I was a teenager," they began, adding: "My best friend when I was 16, she was a stoner, not in need of any radical intervention, and she was sent to a troubled teen institute. "previously described their latest series as "a lifelong passion project""
Mae Martin created Wayward, a mini-series inspired by a childhood friend's time in a troubled teen institute. The six-year passion project centers on Tall Pines Academy and the troubled teens sent there. Martin stars as Alex Dempsey, a police officer who moves to the area with his pregnant wife, Laura, and encounters Evelyn, who runs the academy and exerts influence over the town. The series follows two troubled best friends, Abbie and Leila, and focuses on their family relationships and how labels and pathologization affect young people. Martin is non-binary and recently produced a documentary on gender fluidity and pursued music.
