Elon Musk reacted negatively to Silicon Valley's opening scene, objecting that the show's party portrayal was inferior to those he attends. The series depicted a Kid Rock performance cutting to disengaged, nerdy tech attendees, which provoked Musk's displeasure and a blunt remark about party quality. A pointed retort emphasized the wealth gap and fictional status of the show's characters. Mark Zuckerberg also showed disapproval after a staged comedy bit went wrong during a science awards ceremony where onstage dialogue was altered to echo a graphic moment from the show's first season.
"Silicon Valley" followed a crew of lame, socially awkward tech bros. The real Valley leaders weren't impressed. Kumail Nanjiani, an actor from the hit 2010s HBO show, said that he met both Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg. On Mike Birbiglia's "Working it Out" podcast, Nanjiani said that neither tech mogul was quite pleased with him. Nanjiani said that Musk "didn't like the show" - and specifically its first scene.
At the start of "Silicon Valley," Kid Rock performs a rock set with electric guitars and strobe lights. After setting off sparklers, the camera cuts to the audience, revealing a scattered crowd of nerdy tech guys not paying attention. "Elon was upset," Nanjiani said. "He was like, 'Well, the parties I go to are much cooler than these parties.'" Musk is known to party. In 2023, he attended a meeting with France's then-Prime Minister Emannuel Macron unshaven.
