His wife Kimberly said he met his final days with courage, faith and grace and asked for peaceful privacy as the family grieves. Van Der Beek publicly confirmed a colorectal cancer diagnosis in November 2024 and was later identified as having stage-three cancer, which he described as a surprise. He expressed optimism through 2025 and missed a September 2025 Dawson's Creek reunion for health reasons. He urged others to get tested. His career began in 1994 Off Broadway and included major TV and film roles and a planned appearance in a Legally Blonde prequel series.
