Is 'The Boroughs' Netflix's Next 'Stranger Things'?
"For years, we've wondered why no one has made a film like Ron Howard's wonderful Cocoon since, well, Cocoon. Then, out of nowhere, Jeff and Will emailed us an idea for The Boroughs: a story about retirees and monsters. They were adamant that—unlike so many stories about older characters—this wouldn't treat aging as a punchline. Instead, it would treat its characters as real people facing real challenges ... along with a few supernatural ones."
"While the characters are a little older than the kids in Stranger Things—they ride golf carts instead of bikes—the spirit is very much the same. At its core, this is a story about belonging and growing up—no matter your age."
The Boroughs is an eight-episode drama set in a retirement community where a grieving newcomer arrives and encounters something monstrous that disrupts their lives. A misfit crew of retirees must unite to solve the mystery while proving that aging doesn't mean life is over. The series features an acclaimed cast including Bill Pullman, Geena Davis, Alfred Molina, Alfre Woodard, Dennis O'Hare, and Peter Clarke. Created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews with the Duffer Brothers as executive producers, the show treats older characters as real people facing genuine challenges alongside supernatural elements, drawing inspiration from Ron Howard's Cocoon while maintaining themes of belonging and community similar to Stranger Things.
