'Industry': Inside Eric's Shocking Turn and What to Make of That Last Shot
"I had felt like a circle had been closed, and I said, 'Well, if we're going to continue, then we need to open a new circle.'"
"He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man."
"We wanted to make good on that quote, which is 'What is he at his most beastly, indulging in that really vicious side of his id?'"
"It's the clearest example of a character wanting to be a better person. And because it's 'Industry,' that character has to have the greatest fall."
Ken Leung requested a materially different direction before committing to a fourth season, saying a closed circle would require opening a new one to continue. Leung invoked Samuel Johnson's line about making a beast of oneself to capture Eric's abandonment of humanity. The creators used that idea to explore Eric at his most beastly while starting Season 4 with a more reflective, retired Eric drawn back to London to mentor Harper and make amends. The season ends with Eric's catastrophic fall after learning the person he slept with is 14, leading to a public apology, a dissolved partnership, and a final walk-off.
