How The Rookie Landed the Dropout Kids
"I became a huge fan last year and started watching a lot of their stuff. So I reached out to Sam because I thought it would be a fun idea: 'Hey, you don't know me, but is there any world in which you might be interested in doing this out-of-the-box crossover?'"
"I just thought it would be funny to set these guys loose and have Nathan Fillion, one of the best straight men in the world, try and get witness statements from them."
The Rookie, known for experimental episodes, partnered with Dropout Entertainment for an unconventional crossover featuring Sam Reich and Game Changer cast members. Unlike typical network-TV crossovers driven by corporate synergy, showrunner Alexi Hawley initiated this collaboration after becoming a fan of Dropout's content. Hawley reached out directly to Reich with the creative concept. The episode was designed to explore the comedic potential of placing improv comedians alongside The Rookie's procedural format, with Nathan Fillion serving as a straight man to the chaotic energy the Dropout talent would bring to witness interrogations.
