Here's Why Hulu's 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer Revival' Was Cancelled
"I am really sad to have to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me. I want to thank Chloé Zhao because I never thought I would found myself back in Buffy's stylish, yet affordable boots. And thanks to Chloé, I was reminded how much I love her and how much she means. Not only to me, but to all of you."
"Had it received the green light, the show would revolve around a new Slayer, a bookish introvert named Nova (played by Ryan Kiery Armstrong) who lives in Sunnydale after the town has embraced its supernatural history à la Salem, Massachusetts. In the pilot, Gellar had a one-line cameo that sees Buffy living a quiet adult life."
A Buffy the Vampire Slayer continuation was in development at Hulu with showrunners Nora and Lilli Zuckerman, director Chloé Zhao, and Sarah Michelle Gellar. The pilot featured a new Slayer named Nova, a bookish introvert living in Sunnydale after the town embraced its supernatural history. Gellar appeared in a one-line cameo as adult Buffy, with the pilot ending on a cliffhanger suggesting her return to train Nova. The project, titled Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, was cancelled at Hulu. Gellar announced the cancellation in a March 14 Instagram video, expressing sadness but gratitude toward Chloé Zhao for bringing her back to the Buffy universe.
