"At South London's Clapham Grand, in the first of the venue's now-weekly Heated Rivalryclub nights, something was eliciting feral screams. The party hadn't officially started yet, but as hockey-jersey-clad clubbers filtered onto the dance floor, a recognizable needle drop blared through the speakers. It wasn't a soundtrack fan favorite like t.A.T.u.'s "All the Things She Said" or Wet Leg's "mangetout.""
"Before Heated Rivalry, Jones had five albums to his name and zero credits as a composer, but series creator Jacob Tierney was a huge fan of Peter Peter and wrote the scripts while listening to the singer-songwriter's 2024 record Éther. Tierney initially enlisted Jones to create an original score and lend several needle drops from the album. "It just kind of fell through," Jones recalls."
Clubbers at a London venue reacted loudly when the series' opening track "Rivalry" played, signaling the score's immediate cultural impact. The music combines crunchy synths, heavy drumbeats, and tender arpeggios to convey competition and emotion. Peter Jones, credited as Peter Peter, created the electronic score and expected a low-profile role. Jacob Tierney, a fan of Jones's 2024 record Éther, initially sought to use album songs alongside original cues. Negotiations and a moved release date led to abandoning the needle drops and forced Jones to write dozens of original cues across six episodes under severe deadlines.
