Fios customers in Boston and Providence lose FOX channels
""We have been in extensive negotiations with Cox Media Group to reach a new agreement that is fair and keeps your bill from increasing unreasonably," a Verizon spokesperson said. "Unfortunately, Cox Media Group is demanding increases that are neither reasonable nor fair.""
""The latest actions of Verizon/Fios threaten those investments and hurt consumers who rely on us," said Todd Brown, vice president and general manager at Boston 25, in a statement. "Verizon/Fios should stop holding its own customers hostage in its attempts to harm local journalism and community service, all while it tries to get even larger, at the expense of our loyal viewers.""
A contract dispute between Verizon Fios and Cox Media Group resulted in Cox-owned local channels being removed from Fios lineups in Boston, Providence, and Pittsburgh as of Dec. 15. Fios customers lost access to Boston 25 News and Fox, Charge!, and Laff in Boston and Providence, and WPXI, NBC, meTV, Laff, and Pittsburgh Cable News Channel in Pittsburgh. Verizon said negotiations sought a fair agreement to avoid unreasonable bill increases and accused Cox of demanding unreasonable increases. Cox and Boston 25 warned the blackout blocks breaking local news, weather, emergency information, major sports, and entertainment, and urged viewers to pressure or switch providers. Similar threats occurred in 2022 before a last-minute Dec. 16 deal.
