Exclusive: Ayo Edebiri Improvised Her Pop Star Persona On 'I Love LA'
""She's so funny, she improvs so much," Sennott says. "She was like, 'Can I have a mullet and a bedazzled vape and a British accent?' And I was like, 'Go off. Go off, girl.' I love her so much as a friend and also to collaborate with 'cause she brings so much to the table.""
""Ayo and I were joking about like, if we want to hang out, we have to write each other," she says. "We have to hire each other because she's so busy.""
""It's an interesting place for Charlie to go so early in the season, because you see him being a brash guy that's taking no prisoners, and then the second he gets with this person that's employing him, he cowers," he says."
Ayo Edebiri appears as Mimi Rush, a hilariously flamboyant pop star in an HBO series cameo. Rachel Sennott and Jordan Firstman designed a storyline in which Charlie styles a kooky diva who seeks gossip and then fires staff for similar transgressions. Busy schedules and friendship motivated Sennott to cast Edebiri as a way to reconnect through work. The cameo originated from a post-Met Gala hotel Zoom where Edebiri enthusiastically accepted the part. Edebiri expanded the role through improvisation, adding details such as a mullet, a bedazzled vape, and a British accent. Firstman's scenes with Edebiri reveal a more cowering, layered side of Charlie.
