Doof Doof at 40: EastEnders exhibition brings Walford to life in Elstree
"Doof Doof. Set in the fictional borough of Walford - a name born from mashing up Walthamstow and Stratford - EastEnders famously couldn't find a real East London location to film in. Instead, production shifted to the backlot of ATV Studios in Elstree. The BBC took over the site in 1984, creating BBC Elstree Studios, and four decades later, Albert Square still lives there."
"Most of the display is made up of photos spanning the soap's 40-year run - cast members past and present, and plenty of classic moments that long-time fans will instantly recognise. There's also a list of iconic Doof Doof cliffhangers - from divorce papers to hitmen to Ethel's farewell. Behind-the-scenes photos reveal snippets of production life, while a handful of artefacts add tangible nostalgia: Pat Butcher's earrings, Dot Cotton's coat, Sharon's wedding dress, and even some significant candlesticks."
An Elstree museum exhibition marks 40 years of EastEnders with photographs, iconic moments and tangible props near the BBC Elstree Studios backlot where Albert Square is filmed. The display features cast images spanning four decades, a list of famous cliffhangers, behind-the-scenes photos, and artefacts including Pat Butcher's earrings, Dot Cotton's coat, Sharon's wedding dress and notable candlesticks. A fictional street plan of Walford East is shown, with place-name origins and street-layout details suggesting pre-Victorian roads and later railway-era infill. A small mock-up of the Queen Vic provides a nostalgic focal point for visitors.
