Chloe Zhao Mourns Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reboot at Oscars
"New Sunnydale would have returned Gellar's Buffy Summers to Sunnydale, where she'd train a new slayer played by The Lowdown's Ryan Kiera Armstrong. The reboot, produced by 20th Television and Searchlight TV, also included regular cast members Sarah Bock, Faly Rakotohavana, Daniel Di Tomasso, Ava Jean, and Jack Cutmore-Scott."
"According to Deadline, Hulu 'remains high on the Buffy IP and plans to regroup and mull a possible new incarnation of the beloved franchise.' For now, though, Zhao's sadly not the chosen one."
Chloé Zhao, director of the cancelled Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot 'New Sunnydale', mourned the project's cancellation by Hulu. The reboot would have reunited Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers, who would train a new slayer played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong. The production, created by 20th Television and Searchlight TV, featured an ensemble cast including Sarah Bock, Faly Rakotohavana, Daniel Di Tomasso, Ava Jean, and Jack Cutmore-Scott. Gellar announced the cancellation on Instagram while promoting Ready or Not 2. Hulu stated it remains interested in the Buffy franchise and plans to develop alternative incarnations. Zhao, a two-time Oscar-nominated director, was attending the Oscars to celebrate her nomination for Best Director for Hamnet.
