Cheryl Burke Reveals the Name She Had Before She Made Her Parents Legally Change It
"Cheryl Burke made her name on "Dancing With the Stars" but as a child, she had to claim one that felt like her own. In a TikTok video, Burke, 41, revealed that when she was born in 1984, her parents had named her Stephanie, then the sixth most popular name in the country, according to the Social Security Administration. "There was a girl in my middle school who bullied me named Stephanie, so I decided to make my legal name Cheryl Stephanie Burke," she wrote."
"She first joined the show in 2006 and went on to appear in 26 seasons. "Honestly, to be invited back, not as a competitor but as someone who can hopefully share my knowledge, my experience, and my love for the craft of ballroom dancing, it is truly such an honor. I don't take this lightly whatsoever," Burke said in a clip posted on her Instagram."
Cheryl Burke was born in 1984 and originally named Stephanie, then the sixth most popular name in the United States. A middle-school bully named Stephanie prompted a legal change to Cheryl Stephanie Burke, choosing Cheryl to honor her mother Sherri and retaining Stephanie as a tribute to her late father, Stephen. Burke joined Dancing With the Stars in 2006, appeared in 26 seasons, and stepped away from the show in 2022. Three years after retiring, Burke returned as a guest judge on Halloween night, reconciled past absences from a 2023 Len Goodman tribute, and looked forward to meeting a new generation of dancers and celebrities.
