The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office published a death certificate listing pulmonary embolism as the immediate cause of death and rectal cancer as the underlying cause. O'Hara's death at 71 had been initially announced as following a "brief illness." The certificate states she was cremated and her remains were given to her husband, Bo Welch. O'Hara had a five-decade career often portraying mothers, including Kate McCallister in the first two Home Alone films and Moira Rose in Schitt's Creek. Colleagues including Macaulay Culkin and Pedro Pascal posted tributes. She earned Emmy nominations for The Last of Us and The Studio.
