Buffy Reboot Killed By Producer, Sarah Michelle Gellar Claims
"We had an executive on our show who was not only not a fan of the original, but was proud to constantly remind us that he had never seen the entirety of the series and how it wasn't for him...So that tells you the uphill battle that we had been fighting since day one, when your executive is literally proud to tell you that he didn't watch it."
Sarah Michelle Gellar announced the cancellation of Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale on March 14, a continuation series directed by ChloƩ Zhao. In a People Magazine interview, Gellar disclosed that she learned of the cancellation moments before attending a film premiere. She revealed that an executive producer on the show was not only unfamiliar with the original series but was proud of never having watched it entirely, constantly reminding the team that the show wasn't for him. Gellar characterized this as evidence of the significant challenges the production faced from the beginning. While the sole male executive producer credited was Kaz Kuzui, who had been involved in multiple Buffy projects since 1992, speculation suggests Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich may be the executive in question.
