"He was the best road trip companion you could have, the biggest optimist we ever met, a human GPS with a steel trap memory, friendly to a fault, knowledgeable about most any subject, and filled the world with enthusiastic positivity,"
"The stars of the show have always been the people who were featured,"
"Our job is to go out and find interesting, passionate, funny, caring, knowledgeable people, and then get out of the way of their stories."
Doug McConnell died at age 80 from health complications related to a stroke he suffered a few years earlier. He took over hosting Bay Area Backroads in 1993 and remained the host for 15 years, helping the program become one of the country’s longest-running regional television series before KRON shelved it. Typical episodes featured drives, visits to local cafes, and profiles of engaging community members. McConnell later hosted OpenRoad with Doug McConnell on KQED and NBC Bay Area. He suffered a hemorrhagic bleed in the left hemisphere after an anti-clot drug failed while walking into a scheduled talk, requiring extensive physical and other therapy.
