"At the point at which we have wireless connections for headphones, computers, and countless other gizmos, could we imagine some future date in which the tech of EVA suits might be replaced with something a little less analog? In 1973, in the first episode of Star Trek: The Animated Series - "Beyond the Farthest Star" - the crew of the USS Enterprise rocked something called "Life Support Belts" instead of straight-up spacesuits."
"Basically, in the time of the Burn, when Starfleet was fractured, the Miyazaki was trying out some alternatives to warp drive, because all the warp cores in the galaxy had exploded at that point. This gestures at the murky in-between era of Starfleet, which happened after the Burn, but before the arrival of the USS Discovery (via time travel) in 3189. Currently, Starfleet Academy takes place around 3195, putting the exploits of the crew of the Miyazaki somewhere around 3067."
Portable force-field life support returns as "plasma shields" in 32nd-century Starfleet Academy, eliminating the need for bulky hard-shell EVA suits. The revival echoes the 1973 Animated Series idea of "Life Support Belts" used by the USS Enterprise. Episode 6, "Come, Let's Away," features a joint exercise aboard the derelict USS Miyazaki and asks how much of an abandoned ship cadets can safely explore. The Miyazaki experimented with a Singularity Drive as a warp alternative during the fractured post-Burn era when warp cores had exploded. The Miyazaki incident is placed around 3067, while Starfleet Academy operates circa 3195.
