Greg Papa announced on Aug. 2 that he is stepping away from radio play-by-play duties to focus on recovery from an undisclosed form of cancer. The 49ers will employ a mix-and-match group of fill-in play-by-play announcers working alongside analyst Tim Ryan. The fill-ins will appear on 49ers outlets including KNBR-680, 104.5 FM, KSAN 107.7 The Bone and KSFO-810 AM when the regular season begins Sept. 7 at Seattle. Five fill-ins were identified: Guy Haberman (primary), Justin Allegri, Troy Clardy, Carlos Ramirez and Jack Smith, each with varied college and professional broadcasting experience. Papa, 62, has covered Bay Area sports for nearly four decades.
The following announcers will work alongside analyst Tim Ryan on 49ers outlets (KNBR-680 and 104.5 FM, KSAN 107.7 The Bone, KSFO-810 AM) when the regular season begins Sept. 7 on the road against the Seattle Seahawks. With announcers beholden to their own schedules with other duties, five were identified as fill-ins for the 2025 season: Guy Haberman: Served as the 49ers preseason television play-by-play with Ryan and was identified as the primary fill-in.
Troy Clardy: The voice of Stanford football and men's basketball and does college football play-by-play for Westwood One radio. Has worked multiple NFL games on Compass Media Networks and done work with the Pac-12 network and called NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament games. Carlos Ramirez: Host o the 49ers' Pre- and Postgame Live on NBC Sports Bay Area. Has covered Giants and A's and called games for the NFL, NBA, MLB and MLS in English and Spanish.
