Valve initiated and has funded the open-source FEX emulator to enable Windows-native PC games to run on Arm hardware. Valve recruited and convinced specialized developers to start and maintain the long-term project. Valve plans to use FEX for its first Arm-based headset, the Steam Frame, to run Windows-native games without native ports. Valve began planning Arm support as early as 2016 and anticipated roughly a decade of development to reach robust compatibility for large libraries. FEX is already used with Valve-supported tools like Proton to power popular PC emulators on Arm phones and tablets.
