The second feature of the service that we called out was using it to consolidate multiple email accounts into one: collecting email from other services over POP3, which you could manage using the Gmail webmail interface."
"Why is Google doing this now? Opinions vary but some market onlookers suspect it is related to the fact that POP3 requires sending passwords in plaintext. We have asked Google to comment. Starting January 2026, Gmail will no longer support Gmailify and the ability to fetch mail from third-party accounts via POP3. Gmailify provided spam protection and inbox organization for linked third-party email accounts and will be shut down. Gmail will stop fetching emails from external accounts into Gmail using POP. Third-party accounts can still be accessed through the Gmail mobile app, but Gmail’s POP retrieval service will cease. Firefox users may find support pages inaccessible; the support notice was reachable in Chrome. Some observers suspect the change relates to POP3’s requirement to send passwords in plaintext. Google has been asked to comment.
