"QuantumScape (QuantumScapeNYSE:QS) is pushing the boundaries of electric vehicle (EV) technology with its groundbreaking solid-state battery innovation. Unlike traditional lithium-ion batteries, which rely on liquid or gel electrolytes, QuantumScape's solid-state batteries use a solid ceramic electrolyte, promising higher energy density, faster charging, and improved safety. These advancements could address critical EV pain points: limited range, slow charging times, and safety concerns."
"The QSE-5 battery cells, showcased at IAA Mobility 2025 in Munich, powered a modified Ducati V21L motorcycle, marking the first real-world demonstration of anode-free solid-state lithium-metal batteries. With an energy density of 844 watt-hours per liter (Wh/l) and the ability to charge from 10% to 80% in just 12 minutes, these batteries could extend EV ranges to 400 to 500 miles and make charging as quick as a gas station stop."
QuantumScape is developing anode-free solid-state lithium-metal batteries that replace liquid or gel electrolytes with a solid ceramic separator to reduce flammability and improve safety. The QSE-5 cells demonstrated at IAA Mobility 2025 powered a modified Ducati V21L, achieved 844 Wh/l energy density, and reached 10% to 80% charge in 12 minutes. Those metrics translate to potential EV ranges of 400–500 miles and charging times comparable to a gas station stop. A strategic partnership with PowerCo includes a $130 million investment and a non-exclusive license to produce up to 40 GWh annually, expandable to 80 GWh.
