Dark Fibre Africa (DFA) ran a high-capacity transmission trial with Ciena using WaveRouter and WaveLogic 6 Extreme over a 40km route between Isando and Midrand. The test delivered 1.6 Tbps over a single wavelength, over four times the throughput of a prior 400 Gbps demonstration, and set a new IP/optical convergence benchmark. DFA is part of the Maziv group and has rolled out fibre across metros, secondary cities and towns since 2007. DFA completed Phase 1 of an R800m upgrade deploying dry underground distribution cabinets and announced a R400m project to deploy 800 DUDCs; March upgrades added two infrastructure enhancements to improve stability, speed service delivery, and future-proof the network for scale.
