Cloudflare outage takes down X one month after Musk mocked AWS customers | TechCrunch
"The question isn't 'why does Signal use AWS?' It's to look at the infrastructural requirements of any global, real-time, mass comms platform and ask how it is that we got to a place where there's no realistic alternative to AWS and the other hyperscalers."
"Messages on X chat are fully encrypted with no advertising hooks or strange 'AWS dependencies,' so I can't read your messages even if someone put a gun to my head,"
Cloudflare experienced a massive outage Tuesday morning that cut off access to ChatGPT, Claude, Spotify, X, and other services. The outage affected X roughly one month after a widespread AWS outage that had also disrupted services such as Signal. Elon Musk asserted that X chat messages are fully encrypted and inaccessible to him. Signal President Meredith Whittaker emphasized the risks of concentrating global, real-time communication infrastructure on a few providers and questioned the lack of realistic alternatives to hyperscalers like AWS. Cloudflare reported the issue had been identified and that a fix was being implemented, with some services starting to return.
