"fried two Ryzen 9950X CPUs in a few months by running GMP tests."
"Before this problem is fully understood, we must caution people against using GMP heavily on any Zen 5 processor,"
"We suspect that GMP's extremely tight loops around MULX make the Zen 5 cores use much more power than specified, making cooling solutions inadequate."
"We are aware GMP is investigating observations with their program on Ryzen 9950X processors,"
GMP reported two Ryzen 9950X CPUs failed after running GMP tests, with visible discoloration consistent with overheating. One system failed in February and a replacement failed in August. GMP warned against heavy GMP use on Zen 5 processors and suspects extremely tight MULX loops push Zen 5 cores to use much more power than specified, rendering typical cooling inadequate. GMP stated the issue differs from previously reported ASRock motherboard problems; the affected systems used Asus motherboards. AMD acknowledged the observations, has reached out to GMP for details, and is replacing a CPU while investigating.
