Bas van Opheusden recently began his role as a technical staff member at OpenAI. He provided eight pages of practical advice on succeeding in AI job interviews, which includes general interview tactics and coding strategies. He warns that some recruiters may use unethical practices, like imposing short deadlines and retracting offers. He shares his regret from an introductory call, emphasizing the importance of taking notes to remember critical details, as he had forgotten his role while preparing for subsequent interviews. His preferred method for note-taking involves using a dual-monitor setup.
Some recruiters will play dirty. I have had companies give extremely short deadlines, retract offers, ghost me entirely, or 'accidentally' fail to make an offer until after another deadline had expired.
During this call, take notes! It might be the only time someone explains the company's organization chart and team structure. I've had coding interviews 2-3 weeks later where someone would ask what role I was applying to and I didn't know.
I have a dual-screen setup where I can take notes during a call, and I will move the video call window on my screen so that it looks like I'm making eye contact.
