Skyrora eyes Orbex assets as UK rocket rival collapses
"Disappointing doesn't come close to describing how we feel about this moment,"
"We have been successfully developing a sustainable, world-class sovereign space launch capability for the UK and were on the cusp of our first test flights later this year."
"working towards the end of 2022"
"As the only UK company with a domestic launch license and both manufacturing and testing capabilities, Skyrora is best placed to take over Orbex's assets."
Orbex moved to appoint administrators after exhausting funding options and merger-and-acquisition opportunities, likely ending plans to launch the Prime rocket in 2026. The company had repeatedly missed target dates and faced leadership change when former CEO Chris Larmour left abruptly in 2023. Orbex had paused construction at the Sutherland Spaceport at the end of 2024 and had planned initial Prime launches from SaxaVord. Skyrora has lodged a preliminary expression of interest in some Orbex assets and cites its domestic launch license plus manufacturing and testing capabilities as advantages. The administration move is politically embarrassing for the UK government.
