An AI startup founder explains why the H-1B executive order doesn't change his hiring plans
"We should be able to get local talent, or we can hire them offshore through a subsidy structure as a remote worker,"
"The best AI talent is in the US at the moment,"
"extraordinary ability"
Arko C is the cofounder and CEO of Pipeshift, a Bay Area-based AI startup. The company plans to hire up to ten employees over the next year. An executive order raised H-1B application fees to $100,000, but hiring plans remain unchanged. Pipeshift will source talent from the U.S. or hire offshore remote workers through subsidy structures and can pursue alternative visa pathways. Pipeshift was founded in 2024 with Y Combinator backing and raised $2.5 million in seed funding in January. The company provides a platform to build and deploy open-source AI models. Four employees are in the Bay Area and seven are in India. The three cofounders are in the U.S. on O-1 visas funded by Y Combinator.
