Xero to start charging developers API usage fees
"We are deeply committed to investing in our ecosystem"
"introducing a tiered pricing model based on your API connections and usage."
"Designed to meet developers where they are in their app development journey"
"As it stands, RecHound would be up for an annual bill of $17,340.00,"
"As a bootstrapped startup - that would financially eclipse our 2nd highest annual expense by a country mile."
Xero, a New Zealand-founded accounting SaaS with over 4.6 million subscribers across 180+ countries, is changing developer charges for integrations. The company will retire its 15 percent App Store commission and introduce tiered pricing based on API connections and usage. Xero presents the scheme as helping developers forecast and control costs and says it is designed to meet developers where they are in their app development journey. Some developers who previously had free API access say the new charges would impose substantial annual bills; one co-founder estimated an annual bill of $17,340. Developers warn they may pass costs to customers and describe the change as a bait-and-switch.
