OpenELA has launched ELValidated, an open-source verification tool that checks the compatibility of various Enterprise Linux distributions. This initiative, supported by major players like Oracle, SUSE, and CIQ, aims to reduce testing expenses and boost confidence among developers regarding the functionality of their applications across different Linux environments. The tool focuses on validating Application Binary Interfaces (ABI) against established standards, ensuring that applications work seamlessly without additional modifications, thereby filling a significant gap in the Linux ecosystem.
According to Greg Marsden of Oracle, who also sits on the OpenELA board, the tool primarily helps achieve one of OpenELA's original goals. 'Although we all strive to ensure our Enterprise Linux systems are compatible, ELValidated lets us really prove that, to ourselves, as we build the platforms, and to our users, where the compatibility matters most.'
