"Agentic coding workflows, long-running, parallelised sessions in which AI agents and subagents tackle complex problems autonomously over extended periods, are now routinely consuming more compute than users pay for in a month."
"It's now common for a handful of requests to incur costs that exceed the plan price, indicating a fundamental mismatch between how developers now use the product and the infrastructure it was built to support."
"The usage changes that accompany the pause are structured to push heavier users towards the pricier Pro+ tier, which now offers more than five times the limits of the $10-per-month Pro plan."
GitHub has paused new sign-ups for its Pro, Pro+, and Student plans, citing a mismatch between user demand and infrastructure support. Agentic coding workflows are consuming more compute resources than users pay for monthly. The only plan accepting new sign-ups is Copilot Free. Existing users can upgrade or cancel with a refund option. Usage limits are being tightened to encourage heavier users to switch to the pricier Pro+ tier, which offers significantly higher limits compared to the Pro plan. Usage warnings will be added to help developers manage their consumption.
