Microsoft has launched Subscription Editions (SE) of Exchange Server and Skype for Business Server, ending the year-numbered versions. The previous versions are set to lose extended support soon. The transition has been simplified for administrators, with minimal changes in the licensing agreement and version numbers. While Microsoft considers the upgrade low risk, organizations must still carefully test installations. On-premises products remain critical for those unable or unwilling to use Microsoft's cloud solutions. Recent licensing changes reflect shifting priorities for these on-premises versions.
Microsoft has made Subscription Editions (SE) of Exchange Server and Skype for Business Server generally available, marking an end to year-numbered versions.
Running an organization on an unsupported platform is a huge no-no, not least from a regulatory standpoint, but for organizations that can't or won't make the move to Microsoft's cloud, the on-premises products have fulfilled a critical need.
The upgrade is deemed - at least by Microsoft - to be low risk, though a busy few months might therefore lie ahead.
Microsoft said the release demonstrates our commitment to ongoing support for scenarios where on-premises solutions remain critical.
