Woman violently arrested by Solano County Sheriff's deputies secures $17M settlement
"What happened to Ms. Porter and her family should never happen in our society,"
"For those that are listening, I am not resisting,"
"You are not reading me my rights."
"Put your hands behind your back. Get on your stomach,"
Nakia Porter alleged that two Solano County deputies engaged in unlawful seizure, assault, and excessive force during a roadside stop on Aug. 6, 2020. Porter, her father, and three children pulled off a rural road to switch drivers at night. Deputies arrived with lights flashing, drew guns, shoved Porter against a squad car, slammed her to the pavement, and handcuffed her. Porter was jailed overnight on suspicion of resisting arrest but was never charged. Body camera footage captured her saying she was not resisting and that deputies were not reading her rights. Solano County agreed to a $17 million settlement.
