The Glastonbury Festival's art stage highlights pressing global political issues, notably through Mark Wallinger's installation "Jungle Gym." This work, featuring Unicef blue, underscores the plight of children affected by war, particularly in Gaza. Wallinger argues against the complacency of the Western art world amid humanitarian crises, illustrating the disproportionate fear surrounding migration despite relatively stable numbers. The installation challenges visitors to engage with complex issues surrounding migration and the experiences of the innocents caught in conflict, aiming to inspire action and awareness among festival-goers.
"The art world, along with a lot the rest of the Western liberal world, is sleepwalking into the most intolerable state of affairs," says Mark Wallinger.
"Over the past 50 years, the population of the world has doubled from four to eight billion, while the number of migrants in the world has remained fairly constant at 3.5%," he says.
