Stand Against the Leaky STEM Pipeline (opinion)
Briefly

Racial and gender inequities in science continue to exist. A heated argument highlighted views that overlook disparities in academic spaces, particularly regarding the role of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts. Concerns have surfaced, especially following decisions like that on affirmative action, questioning if such initiatives hinder scientific advancement. The objective nature of science neglects personal backgrounds, dismissing challenges faced by marginalized identities. This conscientious disregard contributes to retention issues in STEM, leading to significant gaps in representation.
Science, as a seemingly objective craft, has historically not cared about the self. Science does not care if you couldn't spend free time in the lab because you had to work to support your family.
The gaps are chasmic. A couple years ago, Science published the demographics of principal investigators receiving at least three National Institutes of Health R01 grants.
