Former Congressman George Santos has pleaded guilty to fraud charges and is set to be sentenced, where he expressed remorse for his actions but contended that the proposed seven-year prison sentence is excessively harsh. In a letter to a federal judge, he highlighted his accountability for his crimes while defending his social media remarks against prosecutors' claims of a lack of sincerity in his apologies. Santos' defense seeks a two-year sentence instead, arguing that voicing concerns about punishment should not be criminalized.
"Every sunrise since that plea has carried the same realization: I did this, me. I am responsible," Santos said in his letter to the judge.
Santos asserted, "Santos’s social media posts were being used as a sword against me and that he was not denying his guilt. Contesting the severity of a proposed sentence is not the same as contesting guilt."
In light of his plea deal, Santos has indicated attempts to pay back the $580,000 owed and labeled his situation as being treated as a scapegoat.
Santos expressed profound remorse but criticized the suggested seven-year sentence as overly harsh given the circumstances.
