"Since Trump took office for the second time, he has made it clear that he has a mass deportation agenda,"
"ICE is going to be the largest deportation agency in the entire country. So, it is very concerning that there could be any escalation in here in Alameda County."
"We want to make sure that ICE cannot use any of our county property or any of the private area of our buildings for their work,"
"And they could not use a vacant lot or parking lot for staging operations, processing people. That type of thing."
Nikki Fortunato Bas proposed two policies that were unanimously passed to prepare Alameda County for increased ICE activity. The policies require a countywide response plan to coordinate actions during immigration enforcement and establish ICE-free zones that prohibit ICE from county-owned and controlled properties such as courts, hospitals, vacant lots, and parking areas used for staging or processing. Recent ICE activities in Alameda and Fremont motivated the measures. District Attorney Ursula Jones-Dickson, Sheriff Yesenia Sanchez, and Oakland School Board Vice President Valarie Bachelor supported the policies. Concerns include inability to identify agents during operations and the need to protect community members who use public services.
